The Broken Promise

A friend had just finished putting on (too much, in my opinion) lipstick. I politely didn't say so.

She grabbed a folded commercial napkin and blotted once. When she set the napkin aside, I was immediately entranced by how the three folds of the napkin, which was now slightly bent, introduced a three-tiered "split" in the blot. I thought, "PHOTOGRAPH!"

I asked her for it, telling her I thought it was artistic. I didn't mention I was going to photograph it and "immortalize"it on deviantART!

Factiod: Apparently I am in the small 2% of Deviants who send on average 11-25 Notes per week, out of approx. 22,000 people who responded to this poll. (59% send None.)

WELCOME to my personal visual aesthetic.

I know it's disappointing to follow a link to someone's page, to find that they've hardly posted anything.

I may not have much, but the subjects and themes are very eclectic. Which hopefully means there will be something for almost everyone in my Gallery--and my Gallery has many Categories!

All NEW photography (i.e., shots since spring 2009--as opposed to "new uploads" of older photography taken with a lower-res Nikon and HP) is being shot with my pride and joy, my Canon PowerShot SX10 IS (10MP CCD, f/2.8-f/11 20X integral Optical Zoom [35mm equiv.: 28-560mm]). (Links to full stats, reviews, and tests on this model can be found in my Journal entry "Equipment".)

My gallery is presently sparse because 1) I struggle a lot with "To post or not to post?" and reject 95% of what I shoot, and 2) for the first 5 months of membership here, I was only posting NEW photography--slowly and continually adding new photos almost every week.

:spotlight-left:UPDATE::spotlight-right:
As of 6 Sept. '09, I started, and will continue, a big project I promised you all: I have begun uploading en masse an "explosive infusion" of all my best (read: favourite) work created over the past 3 years.

If you like something you see here...stay tuned:
there's likely a lot more in the same (and new!) genre(s) coming soon!

(If you choose to Watch me (use the[+DeviantWatch] button (above)), you'll not only have each new work automatically show up in the "Deviations" panel of your main Profile page as it is uploaded, but you'll also see a prolifetation of new Categories as they appear in my Gallery as well--maybe someting right up your alley.)

I'm UL'ing practically evey day now, and intend to continue UL'ing over a period of several weeks or more.

:spotlight-left:MY STYLE: Technique: Post-processing):spotlight-right:
(if applicable

Very few of my "normal" photos have been "tweaked." Most of my shots, from whatever camera, have come out well-enough that no photomanip/post-processing is requied, and when it is, it's usually just a B&C adjustment for look-good Web display.

Read about the meager tools currently at my disposal here.

:spotlight-left:MY STYLE: Technique: In-Camera Processing:spotlight-right:
(if applicable)

Read about my in-camera processing here.

If you Note me, or Comment or Critique on a shot, I'll likely go on a field trip back to the subject you liked, and reshoot it with an eye to "giving you more of what you liked," based on your feedback--and if I do, I'll post the "new takes" and notify you of what I've done.

:spotlight-left:MY BRAIN: Things that Affect my Visual Processing:spotlight-right:

I suffer from self-diagnosed, mild "face-blindness," or Prosopagnosia. (See this interesting description of this condition by a man who has an extreme case of it.)

How my prosopagnosia affects what I see in the viewfinder frame--and when "cameraless"--it's reall y hard to speculate. But it involves a part of the brain partially responsible for visual processing, so, it's likely that "it affects my artistic eye" somehow.

I also probably have below-average levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. And, my mom told me that, when I was six months old, my stroller tipped over backwards and I took a hit on the back of the head on hard cement. ;-) So who knows what's broken--err, I mean "special"--"upstairs"?

:spotlight-left:MY BRAIN: Things that Affect my Thinking:spotlight-right:

I believe I also suffer from (again, self-diagnosed) mild/moderate ADD (attention deficit disorder) (- more on that to come....)

I love you all! This site is such a supportive and communal endeavour. Viva DeviantART!

Terrible Typos

Thu Oct 15, 2009, 6:02 PM
Typo for Thu., Oct. 15, 2009
I read a typo in a newspaper today: "A mother is expected to testify yesterday the unimaginable horror of coming home to find ... ."
-- Source: "24 Hours" (Toronto edition), Tue., Oct. 13, 2009, p.8, in article "Mother to testify in B.C. court"

-- If you'd like every new Terrible Typo to automatically appear in your Message centre, then click the [+deviantWATCH] button at the top of this page. On the new page that opens, scroll the list on the left to ~EyeEagle and un-check all the boxes except for the "Journals" checkbox. Finally, click the [SAVE] button at the bottom.

(The "Terrible Typos" mini-feature will always remain small on your page, because the info in it is non-cumulative, that is, it never contains anything except the newest "Typo" [To view previously-published Typos, look here in my "Terrible Typos" Gallery folder.])
